xx Plays Live remaster question
« Thread started on: Jul 22nd, 2017, 1:14pm »

I have the mp3s of a 16 track remastered version of Plays Live. I didn't pay for them, so I don't know where they came from.

However, it had been my understanding that the only two CD versions available were the 16 track Geffen version (which I own and is not remastered, although sometimes it is advertised as such) and the 12 track remastered version called Plays Live Highlights.

I have ordered the Plays Live Highlights CD to compare to my mp3 version.

Does anyone know where this 16 track remastered mp3 version came from? Is it a digital only release?

If there is a remastered version with all the tracks, that would be really great. Even better would be to include any of the other tracks from the tour that weren't originally included in the full Plays Live. I have a 12" with a great version of Kiss of Life. I believe other songs were played on the tour at points.

If you don't know where they came from, how do you know that they are "remastered' versions?

Because when you compare them to the original CD, they sound louder and have more clarity. The audience sounds are not so overpowering, as if they have been mixed down, and the drums and bass sound louder.

Maybe the Japan version is remastered?

The 12 remastered tracks from Highlights are identical to the ones on the 16 track remastered album, so it appears they remastered the whole thing.

The 16 track album was entirely remastered in 2002 and released as a double LP. There is a 16 track double CD reissue from Japan that was released in 2007, and it is identified as remastered. So, this may possibly be a source. On the other hand, the MP3 could also have been derived from the vinyl version as well.
