BTW, years have gone by and unfortunately,( I mean it), I haven't changed my mind about UP,maybe now would be the right time to have a more detached debate over that record, after all time puts things ( and records) in perspective wink

How brave of you grin
Anyway, I gave it a listen a couple of weeks ago, something I have done rarely in all these years and me not listening much to a PG record means a lot...To me.
A couple of good songs and nothing more, too little for Peter, after 10 years. Overcooked, dry, uneven and weak materialwise.

I had a listen to the podcast and I seem to have heard the Stephen Merritt song before, in the movie 'Shall We Dance?'

Seems to me he's doing what Kate Bush did with 'This Woman's Work' and releasing the song he did for a film on his own album, possibly because fans couldn't find the soundtrack.

I'm surprised Real World and Aire Valley Homes don't merge - both have a reputation of taking ages to get something out (at the time of writing, my mum has to wait a year to get a bathroom renovated)!

Excellent.
Totally different but fantastic to hear Peter's voice totally naked so to speak. I think we may not like all of the tracks but some of them are simply stunning.

My personal favourite is The Power of the Heart. Fantastic. Worth the money for this track alone.

Or Gabriel could be just doing what he himself has done with tracks like "Zaar" and "I Grieve"

Wow, the new album really is a grower!

I'm even tempted to say it's the best thing PG has released since Passion and Us. He has stopped working to death the same old formula and instead tries to explore new ground again. I've been so bored with Up and pretty much everything else he has released in the last twenty years, but Scratch my Back I can heartily recommend. At least to those with enough time to listen closely.

At the time of writing I'm listening to PG's interview on the Radcliffe & Maconie show (22 Feb).

Mark Radcliffe recorded the interview while Maconie manned the studio.

Yep I agree its a grower , a slowburner. Beautifully atmospheric in places, haunting in others. There are a couple of tracks that just dont work for me though but time may endear me to them i guess.
A little disappointed with "I think its going to rain today" but thats because its one of my favourite songs and ive heard a couple of beautiful re-arrangements of it. Keyboardist Ian Lynn did a wonderful arrangement accompanied by Barbara Dickson years ago.
Interestingly my 20 year old son , himself a songwriter and musician who had never really got into PG is totally blown away by this album,he saw there was a Bon Iver track on it and he cant stop playing the whole album.
My fave moment so far is when the vocal and strings soar midway through "Heroes". Powerful stuff indeed

'I Think It's Going To Rain Today' was also sung by Bette Midler in 'Beaches', over a montage where C.C (her character in the film) looks up the disease her best friend (Barbara Hershey - also Mary Magdalene in 'The Last Temptation Of Christ') is suffering from in, the library.

By today's standards it's an unusually quiet library - if this had been Headingley in 2010, there'd have been lots of noisy kids running past and people talking loudly on their mobile phones! grin

Well, I happen to love Up, it's my favorite Peter album. But Scratch My Back is a contender for one of his best albums, along with Up, Security, Melt, Car, and Passion.

It is a grower. My Favorite at the moment is The Book Of Love.
